What is cervicobrachial neuralgia?

Cervicobrachial neuralgia is characterized by a severe pain that starts in the back of the neckIt extends down the arm and can sometimes radiate into the hand.

The spine is made up of three distinct regions. The cervical spine comprises the first 7 vertebrae at the nape of the neck. The dorsal spine comprises the next 12 vertebrae. Then the lumbar spine, with 5 vertebrae in the lower back. This complex structure not only articulates the back, but also protects the spinal cord that runs inside the vertebrae. It's the spinal cord that distributes nerve roots to innervate skin, muscles and joints.

Cervicobrachial neuralgia is a type of cervical nerve injury which runs from the nape of the neck to the arm. When irritated or compressed, it becomes painful, giving rise to unpleasant electrical discharges or pinching sensations. Pain can be more or less constant, affecting mobility.

What causes cervicobrachial neuralgia?

Cervicobrachial neuralgia can be caused by a number of pathologies.

This is particularly true of osteoarthritis. When the cervical disc undergoes premature wear, the space between the two vertebrae shrinks, restricting the passage of the nerve root. This loss of surface area can lead to cervical nerve compression.

A herniated disc can also cause cervical nerve damage. Here again, the cervical disc is at the root of the disturbance. The annulus fibrosus is no longer able to hold the soft nucleus of the disc, which causes a protrusion which compresses the cervical nerve.

Ligaments, repeated rubbing between bones, a fracture or other more serious pathologies can also be the cause of this "neck sciatica"That's why it's important to consult a doctor as soon as the first pains appear.

How to recognize cervicobrachial neuralgia?

Several nerve roots may be affected, resulting in cervicobrachial neuralgia. Depending on the area, symptoms may include the following:

  • pain : Similar to an electric shock or a burn, pain is the first sign of cervicobrachial neuralgia. It follows a precise path that can radiate as far as the hand.
  • sensitivity disorders : Tingling in the arm, loss of sensation when touched or a feeling of "cardboardy" skin are also signs of nerve root disruption.
  • loss of mobility: certain meticulous gestures become extremely complex to perform, such as fastening shirt buttons, writing or performing other very specific gestures. This symptom is also the sign of an advanced lesion, and to avoid any risk of complete paralysis, it's important to seek medical advice without delay.

How to soothe cervicobrachial neuralgia?

  • REST: the very first point is obviously rest. It is essential to reduce friction in the cervical spine. Wearing a cervical collar can help limit neck movement.
  • Peppermint essential oil: Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, Peppermint essential oil helps reduce nerve-related pain.
  • rehabilitation : Physiotherapy sessions can gradually restore movement while strengthening the muscles around the disturbed root.

Cervicobrachial neuralgia, also known asneck sciatica” is a painful condition that significantly impacts daily life and must be taken seriously.
