What is the function of the stomach?
To begin with, it's essential to understand the role of the stomach. The driving force behind our digestive systemIts role is to digest food previously chewed in the mouth.
The stomach is located in the upper part of the abdomen, and is connected to the oesophagus, which feeds it. It receives food torn apart by the teeth and tongue, and stores it for around three hours. The walls of the stomach are made up of muscular tissue. Regular contractions of the muscularis propria The gastric mucosa secretes gastric juices, which mix and knead the food. Next comes chemical digestion, generated by the internal mucous membrane that secretes gastric juices. Hydrochloric acid and enzymes, also produced by the stomach, complete the mixture and break down the food. This liquid, called chyme, is propelled towards the small intestine by the action of stomach contractions.
Between 4 and 6 hours to empty all the chyme in the stomach after a meal.
