Hallux valgus, a painful deviation

Hallux valgus, a painful deviation

As disabling as it is painful, Hallux valgus causes progressive deformity of the front of the foot, and can lead to major difficulties in everyday life.

Walking, running or simply putting on shoes without pain can often be very complicated. Better known as bunion, it mainly affects women, who account for almost 95% of patients.

With the weight of the body, the pressure exerted on the feet is intense throughout the day, and a Hallux valgus only accentuates this sensation. Natural solutions can help relieve pain and restore mobility. We talk about them in this article.

Article summary

What is Hallux valgus?

The adult foot is a complex structure. Composed of 26 bones, 16 joints, 20 muscles and over 100 ligamentsAs it carries the weight of the body, it's essential to preserve it. It can also be the source of pain, sometimes very intense, particularly when a Hallux valgus is formed.

This progressive deformation is characterized by the appearance ofa bump on the forefoot. The big toe is at the origin of this outgrowth. When the big toe gradually tilts onto the second toe, it causes the first metatarsal to deviate. The joint becomes protruding, causing severe pain when walking. Simply wearing shoes becomes extremely complicated.

What causes Hallux valgus?

This foot deformity can be caused by a number of factors. Starting with genetics, Hallux valgus is often hereditary. Most women are affected, with the deformity appearing progressively between the ages of 40 and 50. Anatomy also plays a role: when the foot is naturally wide, so-called "Egyptian" feet, where the first toe is longer than the others, are prone to this type of deviation.

We can see that heels and pointed toes, when worn daily, can lead to Hallux valgus.

Finally, other pathologies can increase the risk of this type of deformity. These include osteoarthritis and poliomyelitis.

How to recognize a Hallux valgus?

  • The pain : Even if it's not always the first symptom, the deviation may not present any particular discomfort at first. Discomfort gradually appears with footwear, and repeated rubbing becomes unpleasant.
  • The deformation : Here again, the appearance of a growth is progressive.
  • Loss of function of the big toe : deviation of the big toe can lead to load transfer to the other four toes. The latter gradually retract and take on the shape of claws.

In more advanced stages, there is a real risk of cartilage destruction or even infection. Beyond the pain, Hallux valgus needs to be managed, which is why it's important to consult a podiatrist as soon as the first symptoms appear.

Simple, natural solutions can help ease the discomfort of walking. Here are just a few of them:

  • Appropriate footwear : from the very first signs of pain, wear shoes that are wide and flexible enough to reduce the pressure exerted on the forefoot and the risk of rubbing.
  • Lemon Eucalyptus essential oil : Recognized for its pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties, Lemon Eucalyptus essential oil is rich in citronellal. It soothes pain and calms overheating.
  • STIMCARE patches : the natural action of the patches acts effectively on the disturbances caused by Hallux valgus. Very easy to use, the patches have a prolonged action and offer lasting relief. To relieve Hallux valgus, here's a video tutorial to help you apply your patches: " Relieving big toe discomfort" .

Understanding musculoskeletal disorders

Musculoskeletal disorders, also known as MSDs, are common multi-factorial diseases of the musculoskeletal system (legs, arms, back, neck, etc.).

Professional and extra-professional activities can trigger, aggravate and maintain the onset of these disorders.

MSDs affect all soft tissues (periarticular) such as muscles, joints, tendons and nerves. This functional discomfort, responsible for persistent pain, has repercussions on a variety of bodily regions and, ultimately, on quality of life. We take stock of the situation in this article.
