What is dysmenorrhea?

Although the taboo of female pain linked to the menstrual cycle is gradually beginning to be lifted, it still remains a mystery for many women. However, dysmenorrhea-related pain is no longer a fatality, since it is now possible to naturally soothe these disturbances, while maintaining an ordinary rhythm of life.

But to achieve this, you need to understand what dysmenorrhea is and how to relieve it. We talk about it in this article.

Article summary

What is dysmenorrhea?

The term dysmenorrhea comes from ancient Greek and describes the difficulty with menstrual flowpain that precedes, accompanies or follows menstruation. Even then, women were already suffering during their menstrual cycle.

Pain generally appears a few days before the start of menstruation, with cramps of varying severity. in the pelvic regionin the uterus. The intensity of the pain varies from one woman to another: for some it's bearable, for others the pressure is considerable. Pain can radiate down to the legs, accompanied by headaches, nausea and even vomiting. The most difficult period is generally the first two days of menstruation, after which the pain gradually eases over the following two to three days.

Dysmenorrhea can have social consequences such as absenteeism from school or work, as well as limitations in daily activities (work, sport...). Dysmenorrhea mainly affects teenage girls, between 50 and 70% of whom suffer from it occasionally or permanently, according to the French health insurance system.

What causes dysmenorrhea?

There are two types of dysmenorrhoea: the first, called primary dysmenorrhea concerns very young women. With the onset of menstruation, the pain is quite severe, but generally not serious.

The uterine mucosa that lines the walls of the uterus is called the endometrium. It collects the fertilized egg for implantation. When fertilization does not take place, the uterus contracts to expel the endometrium. It is these contractions that cause pain in the abdomen, sometimes extremely intense.

When menstrual pain persists into adulthood, it is referred to as secondary dysmenorrhea. In some cases, this form of dysmenorrhea may be linked to a deeper pathology such as endometriosis, adenomyosis or a fibroid. These extremely painful and often disabling conditions affect many women, and require regular monitoring by a health professional.

How do you recognize dysmenorrhea?

Primary dysmenorrhea usually appears a few days before the first blood loss. The pain is progressive and reaches a maximum level of intensity. during the first 24 hours of menstruation. They gradually subside over the following days. The main symptoms of dysmenorrhea are as follows:

  • abdominal bloating
  • chest pain
  • headaches
  • general fatigue
  • nausea up to and including vomiting
  • more or less severe cramps in the pelvic region, with pain that can radiate to the back and legs
  • feeling of discomfort

The intensity and duration of symptoms can vary from one woman to another.
