What is irritable bowel?
Also known as functional colopathy or irritable bowel syndromeIrritable bowel syndrome is a disorder of bowel function. It mainly affects people between the ages of 30 and 40, and women are more susceptible, with twice as many cases as men.
The main symptoms are :
- intestinal transit disorders such as constipation, diarrhea or both,
- abdominal pain
- almost constant intestinal discomfort
Irritable bowel syndrome is not a serious condition, but a chronic disease that is difficult to quantify. only 15% of patients suffering from this disorder consult their GP. Pain is mainly caused by the passage of food through the large intestine. When the intestinal muscles contract too quickly, the colon does not have enough time to absorb the water contained in the food, resulting in diarrhea. Conversely, when the contraction is too slow, the patient suffers from constipation.

What causes irritable bowel syndrome?
This digestive system disorders is still poorly understood. There may be multiple causes, and much research is still underway to define the origin of this pathology. However, a number of factors can contribute to irritable bowel syndrome:

Psychological factors :
Stress, anxiety and anguish can trigger attacks of intestinal pain.
Medical history:
A gastrointestinal infection can be the starting point for chronic irritable bowel disorder.
Serotonin:
Some researchers believe that serotonin, a neurotransmitter produced in particular by the intestine, may be the cause. When released in excessive quantities in the intestine, it can have a significant effect on bowel movements.
Other :
Fatigue and hormonal changes have also been cited as aggravating factors in irritable bowel syndrome.
