What is rotator cuff calcification?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The rotator cuff is the name given to the set of muscles that ensure shoulder movement and stability<\/mark><\/strong>. As a reminder, the shoulder is a complex joint, offering the greatest range of motion of any human body. There are 4 rotator cuff muscles<\/mark><\/strong>These include the supraspinatus (supraspinatus), infraspinatus (infraspinatus), subscapularis (subscapularis) and teres minor (teres minor) muscles. These muscles are supported by 4 tendons<\/mark><\/strong> which come together to attach themselves to the humerus, capping the head of the bone. This is the origin of the term rotator cuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We speak of calcific tendonitis<\/mark><\/strong> when calcium crystals are deposited inside the tendon. The deposit is usually linear in shape, measuring between 2 and 5 mm, and causes inflammation of the tendon. Many people experience no symptoms or discomfort at all, so the condition may go unnoticed. Others, on the other hand, experience severe and very painful inflammatory flare-ups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What causes tendon calcification?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Calcification of the rotator cuff is a rather common shoulder disorder, affecting on average 8% of the population<\/mark><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The origin of this disorder is not always clear-cut, but the accumulation of repeated micro-injuries to the tendon may be the cause of a \"tendonitis\". calcific tendinopathy<\/mark><\/strong>. Repeated movements in a professional or sporting context are then blamed, but this is not a general rule. Sometimes, the source of the disturbance remains unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
